Falih ran out and came back with a rifle which he fired at intervals through the roof. I joined in and fired ten shots with mine. At dawn they started to come in across the plain, some on horseback, others on foot, each contingent under its own crimson banner. When at length they were assembled, they charged and counter-charged on their horses, while those on foot stamped round (Plate 40), firing off their rifles and chanting:‘We will go back to the open water,

We will go and bring back Falaij.’
